17 Nov An Insight into the Ongoing Taxotere Lawsuit

Hair loss is one of the common side effects of chemotherapy. However, this effect is supposed to be temporary, and most patients look forward to their hair growing back. This is not the case for cancer patients who have been using Taxotere.

What is Taxotere?

Taxotere is a chemotherapy drug produced by French drug company Sanofi. It was approved by the Food and Drugs Agency in 1999. Initially, it was approved for use by patients suffering from cell lung cancer. Over the years, however, it has been shown to be effective against a wide range of cancers including breast, neck, gastric, and prostate cancer. In fact, it is the best recommendation against breast cancer.

Taxotere’s popularity has grown partly because of its vast application as well as its efficacy – it offers relief for up to three weeks compared to other drugs that last for only one week.

A Costly Deception

For years, Taxotere was presented as the ideal chemotherapy drug. Its marketers were so exaggerative that the FDA issued the company with a warning letter for what it cited as unproven superiority claims.

However, in the recent years, researchers have discovered that Taxotere’s manufacturers were not entirely truthful. Not only is the drug not as effective as marketed, but it also comes with a wide range of hidden side effects – prominent among these side effects is hair loss. Since the company didn’t state that the drug has permanent hair loss effects; affected patients have been flocking to courts to sue the parent company, Sanofi.

The earliest lawsuit against Sanofi was filed in 2015, and the proceedings are still ongoing. By mid-2016, there were about 33 hair loss lawsuits against Sanofi filed in 16 federal courts across the U.S. Owing to the numeracy of these cases, attorneys asked the courts to compose a panel of judges to listen to the cases as a collective.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Legislation heeded the attorneys’ plea and on October 4, 2016, composed a panel to listen to the cases. The cases were consolidated under the products liability litigation MDL no. 2740. They will be heard in the Eastern District of Louisiana and will be overseen by Chief Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt. The total number of plaintiffs is estimated at over 2,300, and more and more plaintiffs are joining the lawsuit.

An Ongoing Battle

As expected, Sanofi has come out strongly in defense of Taxotere. As such, the legal batter is still ongoing as more and more people file lawsuits and as the company fights back.

Considering that similar lawsuits can go on for years, it doesn’t seem like this case will be concluded anytime soon unless all parties agree on out-of-court taxotere settlement awards. In the meanwhile, however, most plaintiffs are taking out lawsuit fines to help them finance their cancer treatments. With time, however, the plaintiffs may have their way and get compensation for the company’s deceitfulness that has led to the loss of their hair and the social and personal constraints that come with it.

06 Nov What Are the Common Taxotere Side Effects

There are several common side effects of taxotere. The first side effect is the increased risk of getting an infection. This is because it is going to reduce the amount of white blood cells that are inside of the blood. The white blood cells help fight the infections so when there are less, then it reduces the chances of a person getting an infect. The second side effect is breathlessness and looking pale. This is because the amount of the red blood cells in the body are going to decrease. The red blood cells are what is going to carry the oxygen to the body.

The third side effect of taxotere is tiredness or weakness like fatique. This is going to happen during and after the treatment. It can take up to 6 months for a person to get their energy levels back to the way that they were. The small amount of red blood cells in the body can also make a person feel tired. The fourth side effect is hair loss. This is going to happen about 2 or 3 weeks after taking the medication and will normally grow back a few months after the treatment is done. More on this topic can be found here. Can Taxotere cause me to suffer permanent hair loss?

The fifth side effect of taxotere is a skin rash. Most of the time, the rash is going to be very itchy. It is very important to tell your doctor about the rash so that they can give you some medicine to help stop the itching. It is also going to make the skin smoother. The sixth side effect is a buildup of fluid. A person is going to notice that they have gained some weight along with some swelling in their face, hands, and feet. But if you take the steroids, then there is a less chance of this side effect happening to you.

The seventh side effect of taxotere is fingernails that are discolored. Most of the time, this is going to go away after the treatment is over in a few months. The eighth side effect is soreness, redness, or peeling in the hands and feet. You might also experience some dryness, pain, numbness, and tingling in your hands and feet. Some of the things that you can do to help this is to keep your hands and feet as cool as possible, do not put them in hot water, no tight fitting gloves or socks, and keep the keep moisturized.

The ninth side effect of taxotere is a sore mouth. This means that it might become very painful to swallow any drinks or food. It is a good idea to use a mouth wash on a regular basis to help with this. There are also some painkillers to take before you eat to help with the soreness. The last side effect is diarrhea. If this starts to happen to you, then you need to drink plenty of water so that you will be able to stay hydrated. Tell your doctor about the diarrhea so that they can prescribe you some medication.

14 Jul Treating epilepsy with CBD

A growing body of evidence suggests that Cannabidiol or CBD (CBD VAPE) is a safe, effective treatment for people suffering with epilepsy. Over 2.3 million Americans suffer with this neurological condition marked by recurring, uncontrollable seizures. Researchers have been desperately searching to find a way to control and manage this life-altering condition. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, CBD shows great promise for helping people with epilepsy live a more normal life. They point to the long history in Africa, Greece, China, India, Rome and many other countries as well as modern research on the efficacy of treating seizure disorders including epilepsy using cannabis.

Long Documented Positive Results

The anticonvulsant, neuroprotective and muscle relaxant properties of cannabis is well documented. Respected health care professionals including J.R. Reynolds, Queen Victoria’s British physician, Irish physician Dr. William O’Shaughnessy, Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a Harvard psychiatrist and many others have written about the effectiveness of CBD in treating epilepsy and other neurological conditions in the past. More recent research has shown that modern anticonvulsant drugs like carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone, valproic acid, clonazepam, ethosuximide, phenobarbital and others are less effective than CBDs and also have many negative side effects.

Better Tolerated Than Conventional Epilepsy Drugs

Many conventional pharmaceutical epilepsy drugs cause headaches, double vision, depression, nausea, liver failure, impotence, irritability, sleep disturbances, slurred speech, weight gain, hair loss and other side effects. States including Alabama, Louisiana, New York, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin have begun to allow the use of CBD to treat epilepsy and other conditions. Many children with epilepsy that are treated with CBD oil go from hundreds of seizures a week to one or two a month.

Studies Show Positive Results

A study done in 1975 that the Journal of the American Medical Association published, a 2003 Virginia Commonwealth University study published by the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, as well as a 2014 Polish study reported on by the Journal of Neural Transmission as well as many other studies all show that CBD can help patients suffering with epilepsy. Respected medical professionals like the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at NYU Langone Medical Center’s director Dr. Orrin Devinsky, are calling for more research into the use of CBD to treat epilepsy.

Positive Clinical And Anecdotal Evidence

In a recent survey of parents with children suffering from pediatric treatment-resistant epilepsy, 84% said CBDs significantly helped to improve their children’s condition. There is also clinical evidence suggesting that Cannabidiol is effective in preventing spasms whether from epilepsy or multiple sclerosis. While the antiepileptic mechanisms through which of CBDs work are not fully understood, CBDs seems to positively impact the equilibrative nucleoside transporter and several receptors in the brain. Plus CBD is proven to have a neuroprotective effect.

Exciting Results

A Science Daily article in 2016 entitled “Cannabidiol for treating seizures Show Promise” reported on groundbreaking working being done at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on treating people with epilepsy using CBD. This is just one of many examples of researchers worldwide getting positive results using CBD. Many epileptics and their loved ones are hoping for greater access to CBD treatment.

27 Mar Cancer Treatment Options and Procedures

Cancer. Those are probably the last words you expected to hear from your doctor after undergoing a routine check-up. You probably have many questions. What stage is my cancer? How aggressive is it? What is the prognosis? What are my options? There are many treatment options and procedures available depending on the type of cancer you have been diagnosed with. Below are the main types of treatment available.

Surgery

Depending on the location of your cancer will determine whether or not a surgeon can remove some or all of it. The two most common types of surgery for cancer removal are open and minimally invasive surgery.

During open surgery, the surgeon will make a large incision in the area of the body where the cancer is located to remove the tumor, or cancer, and possibly some healthy tissue as well. Often times, nearby lymph nodes are also removed to prevent the cancer from attacking these.

During minimally invasive surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions instead of a large one. A laparoscope is inserted into the incision and uses tools to remove the tumor and any healthy tissue surrounding it that may be affected.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation is a common procedure used to treat cancer. This therapy uses high doses of radiation to kill the cancer cells and decrease the size of tumors. Radiation can either be used to cure or stop cancer growth or ease the occurrence of cancer symptoms.

There are two types of radiation therapy: external beam and internal radiation. External beam radiation aims radiation at the location of your cancer. The machine does not touch you but will move around you sending beams of radiation to your body in different directions. This type of radiation is only specific to one specific section of the body.

Internal radiation is when radiation is put into your body using a solid or liquid. A solid source of radiation is called brachytherapy where the patient ingests the radiation in the form of seeds, ribbons, or capsules. Radiation, in liquid form, is given through an IV destroying any cancer cells it comes in contact with.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is probably the most common method oncologists use to treat or ease the symptoms of cancer. It is used to kill cancer cells and prevent the growth of new cells. For some people, chemotherapy may be the only treatment they need to combat their cancer. Others have to use radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. Chemotherapy is often combined with other treatments to do the following: \

  • Shrink tumors before and after radation
  • Destroy cancer cells
  • Assist other treatments
  • Destroy cancer cells that have reappeared or spread eslewhere

Unfortunately, chemotherapy has many undesirable side effects. The most common side effects are fatigue, nausea, hair loss, and mouth sores. Medications or natural sources like CBD oil can help with those. Please consult with your doctors, as pain medications are usually prescription only. Same goes for CBD and its derivated – you can usually only buy cbd oil with a proper prescription. When undergoing chemotherapy, it is essential to have someone accompany you to and from the treatment. You will also need to ensure that you are able to rest following the day of chemotherapy and ask for any help you may need. Chemotherapy can be a costly procedure but is covered by most insurance companies. Check with your insurance company to ask about what services they will cover.
